May 18, 2010 Meeting Notes

 

Meeting called to order.

Reading of the minutes approved.

General Items:

Community Education:

1.                  Fall Festival Committee:

·                    A call has been placed to the Carpenter’s Place to see if we can reserve the facilities for this year’s Fall Festival.  Just waiting for a reply.  Kathy will try to get in contact with George McCafferty to see if he is willing to let us use his facilities again.

·                    We had our first committee meeting today and divided out assignments. We are planning on having a pumpkin patch, scarecrow contest, pie contest, muster and other agencies being involved.  It will still be free to the vendors, agencies and community. 

Grant Updates:

1.                  Thomas Street Education update

·                    Gary put an article in the Messenger regarding defensible space and is hoping that there will be phone calls resulting from this article for free inspections.

2.                  Rooster Ridge Fuel Break

·                    The contract was awarded and Brushbuster will be starting soon.

3.                  USFS Grant Updates

·                    There are two grants that have been approved by the USFS.

·                    There were approved through the Watershed Restoration Enhancement Act.

·                    Long Point – 150 acres – connects into Shirttail Fuel Break.

·                    Roach Hill II – 100 acres – Part of this project is on John Hughes’s property and the THP is already done.

·                    Still no word on when these projects will start.

4.                  2009 Clearing House Grant Projects

·                    Still no word on these projects.

5.                  2009 Stimulus Package Funding

·                    Forest Service is still waiting to find out if it is awarded.  Still no word on these projects.

Group Reports-

PCFSA-           Placer County Fire Safe Alliance   PCFSA is looking to changing the meeting day to the 3rd Thursday of the month at the same time of 10:00 as this will accommodate the Core Team members being able to attend. 

FFPD-             Foresthill Fire Protection District – The remodel is almost complete. Ambulances have been moved to Station 88.

DAT-                    Disaster Action Team – They participated through the Red Cross at the Placer County MCI in Roseville and Auburn.  Everything else is going fine.  Gary wants to know where the information that was taken on the shelter sites went to.

Cal Fire           California Department of Forestry – N/A

BLM-              Bureau of Land Management – N/A

USFS-             United States Forest Service – Gearing up for fire season.  There has been some fire activity down in Southern California already.  There are negotiations in progress on cutting on USFS land for 4291 compliance.  There are still a number of piles in the Sugar Pine area that need to be burned but they are putting a stop to burning until fall and there will be some mastication done by the Big Dipper area.  Black Oak logging down by the American River complex, up by Whiskey Hill they will try and get some of the black logs out, Humbug area there will be logging and mastication when the soils allow for the heavy equipment.  There is a lot of snow and at this time the lookout might not be stationed until July.  The Forest Service 514 will be station at Bowman from June until fire season stops.  Two engines here for the summer with one being a new truck.

Firewise-         N/A

BOR-              Bureau of Reclamation – Project Canyon Safety is this Saturday May 22nd.  One matching grants of $75,000 if they can find the matching funds.  Helicopter 514 will be stationed at Bowman.  There should be burning done around the bridge starting soon.  Land management, Lake Clementine will not close for two years now.  Walter is having a meeting with Supervisor Montgomery, Senator Gaines, and Representative McClintock on Monday regarding Lake Clementine.

 

New Business:              Big Gun Mine has new owners – Westerfelt Ecological Services.  They bought the property due to the Red-legged Frog as there is the biggest collection of the frogs around, which is a protected species. Lu is trying to put together some numbers for a shaded fuel break around the Michigan Bluff area.

 

                                    Robinson is starting to log on Ralston Ridge through mid July and other areas around Ralston through the summer.
